Fixed partial denture ( FPD) Dental Bridges Types of FPD

Fixed partial dentures, also known as dental bridges, are a type of dental restoration that is used to replace one or more missing teeth. They are a popular option for patients who do not want to wear dentures or undergo dental implant surgery. Fixed partial dentures are attached to the natural teeth or dental implants on either side of the gap, providing a stable and long-lasting replacement for missing teeth. In this blog, we will discuss the different types of fixed partial dentures.

  1. Traditional Fixed Partial Dentures: These are the most common type of dental bridges. They consist of one or more artificial teeth (pontics) that are attached to dental crowns on either side. The dental crowns are placed over the natural teeth adjacent to the gap and are cemented into place. Traditional fixed partial dentures are made of porcelain, ceramic, or a combination of metal and porcelain.

  2. Cantilever Fixed Partial Dentures: Cantilever bridges are used when there is only one natural tooth adjacent to the gap. The pontic is attached to a dental crown that is placed over the natural tooth. Cantilever bridges are not as stable as traditional fixed partial dentures and are not recommended for areas of the mouth that undergo heavy chewing or biting forces.

  3. Maryland Fixed Partial Dentures: Maryland bridges, also known as resin-bonded bridges, are a conservative option for patients who have minimal damage to their natural teeth. The pontic is attached to a metal or porcelain framework that is bonded to the back of the adjacent natural teeth. Maryland bridges are less invasive than traditional fixed partial dentures because they do not require dental crowns to be placed over the natural teeth.

  4. Implant-Supported Fixed Partial Dentures: Implant-supported bridges are a more permanent solution for missing teeth. Dental implants are surgically placed into the jawbone and act as an anchor for the pontic. Implant-supported bridges are the most stable and natural-looking option for patients, but they require a significant amount of time and investment.

Fixed partial dentures are a popular and effective option for patients who are missing one or more teeth. The type of dental bridge that is recommended for you will depend on several factors, including the location of the gap, the health of your natural teeth, and your budget. If you are considering a fixed partial denture, it is important to discuss your options with a qualified dentist who can help you make an informed decision.
