Atraumatic Restorative Technique (ART) in Dentistry.


Not All tooth caries require an aerotor for removing caries from the tooth surface. Yes, You can remove caries in the tooth surface without the help aerator, when caries won't extend to the pulp from the dentin. It is done by the technique called Atraumatic Restoration.

As the name tells us "Atraumatic" means "without trauma to the tooth structure". This technique involves the removal of caries with the help of hand instruments such as chisel and explorers and restores the prepared with adhesive resins such as Glass ionomers. This technique prevents the loss of sound tooth structures due to fewer cavity preparations.

Procedure for performing Atraumatic Restorative Technique


Proper Isolation is achieved either by a cotton pellet or rubber dam to avoid contact with the oral environment. Clean the surface of the tooth with the wet cotton pellet. Then Gradually widen the entrance of the carious lesion. Remove the carious tooth structure with the help of the hand instruments. After removal, provide pulp protection if necessary. Condition the cavity and the occlusal surface. Then mixing the glass ionomer cement for restoration with recommended ratio. Petroleum jelly is coated over the Occulusal surface and check for high points. If high points are present, remove them with the carver. Avoid Eating and Drinking for at least one hour.

Indications for ART


It is Indicated when caries involving Dentin, not to the Pulp. The cavities are accessible by the hand instruments. In Dental Camps and Public Health Programs.

Contraindications for ART


ART is contraindicated where caries involving pulp and inaccessible by the hand instruments. When there is the presence of an abscess, fistula to the involved tooth. 

Advantages of ART


ART helps in the conservation of Tooth Structure and bio-friendly. During Procedure, it causes less pain so there is no need for local anesthesia. It prevents occurrence of secondary caries. It is economical.

Disadvantages of ART


Hand Fatigue is the most common problem in this technique. The duration of Glass ionomers ART is not more than 3 Years. Hand mixing of the GIC sometimes unstandardized among various regions of the world.
